Cayman Academy celebrated Reading Week from Monday October 10 to Friday October 14, 2011 at the school on Walkers Road. The week of activities under the theme “Reading is Fundamental” was declared opened by parent and local attorney Mrs. Keva Reid who injected some humour in her presentation with a video clip of teen pop idol Selena Gomez skilfully and adroitly demonstrating that reading is fundamental to health and safety. Using this as a launch for her discourse, Mrs Reid linked reading to learning, self- esteem and success.
Other features of the week included poster, song, poem, book mark competitions as well as the inter-house spelling bee in which Jaguar house managed to walk away with the coveted trophy. Tiger and Puma took second and third places respectively. As was the case last year, the winning poster was placed on the Reading Week T-Shirt. Thalia Naranjos of Year 5 was the winner of the poster competition this year.
“Snuggle-Up and Read”, another exciting feature of Cayman Academy’s Reading Week, was held on Thursday night, October 13. Local author Lady Rabia Azim Abdul was guest reader that night. The attendees were treated to tea, cake and specially donated fruits courtesy of Foster’s Food Fair.
Reading Week at Cayman Academy would not be complete without visits by celebrity readers. This year the school welcomed the Hon. Cline Glidden, MLA, Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly; Mr. Kurt Tibbets, M.L.A. and former Chief Minister [a position now known as Premier]; Minister Mike Adam, MLA, Mr. Elio Solomon, MLA. Ms Stacey Kelly also read for a class. Additionally, three of our students in the primary school, Jonela McLean, Raget Ricketts and Ocean Edwards, greatly impressed Conference Administrators by reading to them.
An exciting new feature of Reading Week 2011 was the “One-For-Book Drive” undertaken to raise funds to purchase a reading assessment kit for the school. Our heartiest thanks to Foster’s Food Fair IGA and Kirk’s Supermarket, for kindly consenting to allow our students to collect funds at their establishments, and a special thank you to those who were able to give.
Reading Week 2011 also saw burgeoning talents on display in the persons of Rashida Smith and Antonica Borges. Both young ladies conducted a ‘Vox Pox’ in town to get the wider community’s view on the importance of reading.
Another fun-filled but educational Reading Week at Cayman Academy drew to a close on Friday to the strains of teacher Allison Broomfield’s creation: “Reading Week, Reading Week Reading Week, drop your games and take a look and you will find a very good book, sit, relax, join the fun of Reading Week.” Everyone had a jolly good. We look forward to Reading Week 2012 with eager anticipation.
